14 Tell-Tale Signs You’re A Part of Our Tribe

welcome home 2LC Johnson of Colored Girl Confidential is always going on and on about her tribe. My tribe this and my tribe that. What the heck is a tribe?

Oxford dictionary described a tribe as:

a social division in a traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect, typically having a recognized leader.

In short, LC’s tribe is her peeps! The people who get her. The people who like her. The people she speaks for. And, the people she’s passionate about helping.

The more information she gathers about them, the better she’s able to serve them.

Colored Girl Confidential is not about LC. It’s about the entire tribe. And, she does great work because she has them in mind.

Which made me pause and think…

Who is my tribe?

Who reads this blog?

Who should be reading this blog?

Who am I speaking for?

So, I thought agonized about it for a few days. And, here’s what I have:

1. We are Christians.

We believe in Jesus Christ and his teachings. Period.

2. We are women.

Fellas, we love you and you’re welcome to continue hanging out with us. Right, ladies? But, when we create, we are creating with women in mind.

3. We have a deep joy.

We are not your grumpy, cynical Christian. We may not always be chipper and things might not go our way, but even on our worst days, we KNOW that God has good plans for us. And, he uses ALL things to shape and bless us.

4. We are radical.

Who’s gonna stop me?

We are daughters of the most high! God sent his son to die for us! The Holy Spirit lives in us! We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! And, what God has called us to do, no man can stop! Can I get an amen, ladies?!

5. We want it all.

We are grateful for what we have, but we are far from comfortable. We want everything God promised us! We want overflow. We want abundance.

6. We want it now.

We aren’t waiting ” ’til we get to Heaven.” We want joy NOW. We want peace NOW. We want blessings NOW. We want God NOW.

7. We think long.

We aren’t just thinking about today or tomorrow. We’re thinking about the next 5 generations. We want our great great great great great great great great great grandchildren to reap from how we sow today.

8. We don’t fit in boxes.

We’re not team anything. And, we don’t try to make others look like us. Instead, we help one another to look more like Christ each day.

9.  We boast in our weaknesses.

“It ain’t me, girl! It’s the God IN me!”

We always have a testimony! We understand that our weaknesses give God the opportunity to shine in our lives. Sharing how we overcame is one more chance to reach an unbeliever or help someone struggling in their faith.

10.  We want THE BOMB life.

Jesus did EPIC stuff. He WOWed people. When people encountered him, they were not the same. He had all the power and resources to CHANGE LIVES. His life made all the difference and his absence was felt.

We want to raise world changing kids! We want big homes to host people! We want to pack out auditoriums in the name of Jesus! We want to write books that save the masses! We want to get our lives in order so people are drawn to us and we can share the goodness of God with them.

We want our blog posts to go viral! We want our stories to save lives! We want our food to soothe the soul and heal the sick! We want to travel the world and see the creation of the Father. We want the freedom to decide how we schedule our day so that we are satisfied in the evening.

We yearn to make a difference. We want to be a blessing to those who encounter us. We want people to look at us and say, “You said Jesus did this for you? I need to get to know this dude! Can you tell me how to meet him?”

11. We are chosen.

Living for Jesus isn’t something we made up one day. It is a deep calling we’ve felt for a long time, even when we tried not to feel it. We have been set apart and we know in the pits of our stomachs that we have been called to bring glory to God in how we live our lives.

12. We are dedicated to growth.

We want to be in a different place 6 months, 1 year, 5 years from now. We are always striving to become better than we were yesterday.

13. We choose God over everything.

We have decided that we don’t want anything that will hinder our relationship with God. We choose God over egos. We choose God over grudges. We choose God over revenge. We choose God over our deepest desires. We understand that choosing God is the only way we can live our best life.

14. We are a sisterhood.

A sisterhood is a bond between two or more girls, not always related by blood. They always tell the truth, honor each other, and love each other like sisters (Urban Dictionary).

No shade here. We are light. God has given us all unique gifts and our own personal testimonies. We spur each other on with tips, tools, testimonies, and praise. And, we sharpen one another with the Word.

Insatiable, Jesus following, world changing, BIG IDEAS having women who want every drop of awesome God had in mind when he created us.

None of the above matters IF you skip this part so please don’t.

If that is you, FIRST I want you to stand up and do a happy dance because you’ve found your tribe! Thank you God for bringing this sisterhood together!

*If it’s not you, but you know someone and it’s so them, please forward this post along.

SECOND, I want you to subscribe.

THIRD, I want you to introduce yourself in the comments!

FOURTH, I want you to share this blog post with any woman you feel may also be a part of our tribe.

I can’t wait to meet all of you!

In fact, I’ve been waiting to meet you all of my life.

With Love,

  1. This blog post is it! I am Eugenia, a follower of Christ — aiming to know Him and live the abundant life He gave, to be strong and do exploits in His name, and honour Him with every fibre of my being. All 14 signs indicate I am part of this tribe. 🙂

  2. Thanks! I’m from Toronto, in Canada. I work in communications as an editor but I do not blog – yet. Working on discovering “my voice” and theme. I look forward to getting to know you too.
